Texas Rib Candy Review

The Texas Rib Candy finishing sauce is something I’ve had my eye on to review for a while now. From what I’ve heard, it’s very popular in the comp scene and I’ve had several people ask me to review it…so here it goes 🙂

First off, the best thing about this sauce is that it comes 10 flavors…and all of them sound amazing. I got my hands on the apple-cherry habanero flavor which I assume would be one of their most popular flavors…but don’t know for sure. I’m guessing that because of how well apple and cherry flavor profiles go with a lot of different types of barbecued foods.

As you see in one of the pics below, the sauce pours incredibly thin and transparent…almost like water…so it doesn’t take a whole lot to cover a rack of ribs. The reason why this approach works is because of the pectin ingredient. Pectin is a naturally occurring thickening agent (when heated together with sugar) and works especially well with ribs (hence the name of the product obviously…). But…as the label suggests (and after having tasted this sauce), it’s going to work really well with other meats, so don’t let the name deter you from picking up a bottle to try on something other than ribs.

In one of the pics below, for a comparison, I purposely glazed a rack of ribs with a traditional, thicker BBQ sauce in the background, and then in the foreground, a rack I had just glazed with the Rib Candy. The Rib Candy pours on almost completely clear and watery-like, but because of the surface temperature of the meat (and again…because of the presence of pectin), it thickened almost immediately and left a gorgeous sheen on the ribs.

The sauce definitely has a kick to it, but if you’re a big heat-lover (like I am), then it’s really just moderate IMO. The best way I would describe it is a bit of sweet followed by a bit of heat. I definitely could taste hints of the apple and cherry and it left me really wanting to try out some of the other flavors. If you’ve tried any of the other flavors, let me know in the comments below what your favorites are and what you used it on.

I’ve seen this on Google+ and on Instagram. Yours is the first good review I’ve seen on the Rib Candy. I’m gonna try and get my hands on some and give it a try myself.
