Reader Spotlight: Detroit Lions Mini WSM

Another one of my readers, Joe, built his first “Mini” Weber Smokey Mountain (or “WSM”) the other day and was kind enough to send me pics of the build.  I gotta hand it to him, he did a great job.  I especially like the blue paint job.  Pics and Joe’s captions are below.  Also check out my step by step guide for building your own Mini.

“I decided to cut out the entire bottom out instead of drilling holes.  I hope this will give me higher temps when needed for chicken and hot/fast recipes. I am going to use the steamer rack that came with the SJG and cut it down to size and foil for the diffuser.  I also added an extra rack so that I can have 3 if needed.”

“I also added a cajun bandit grommet for my maverick temp probe instead of adding a built in temp gauge.”

Mini WSM

“I added a few die cut decals and peeled them off after the paint job.”

“I painted in VHT Blue and clear gloss and added a handle and came up with this.”

“It goes well with my favorite weekend toy.”

I have got to get around to doing this set up for my Smokey Joe. It would be perfect for work.

Impressive work! Not so sure about his taste in teams, but it’s a great looking Smokey all the same!

Great little smoker!!! Question – where did you get the handles?

The handles came with the pot. It’s a Vasconia 32 qt steamer pot and is available on amazon. This is a great little smoker. Enjoy!

      Thanks Joe,

I guess I am referring to what looks like plastic handles you put on the metal handles of the steamer pot.

        Hey Dave,

Those plastic handles came on the pot. As long as you go with the Vasconia Pot, it should be delivered the same way. With Plastic handles.

Thanks. Just did not see them in the description/picture on Amazon and did not know if it was an after market addition.
