Operating a BBQ Guru DigiQ DX with a Weber Smokey Mountain

In a previous post, I shared a video of me unboxing a BBQ Guru DigiQ DX temperature controller.  In that video, I briefly walked through the various components to the DigiQ DX setup and discussed various options with building the kits out.  I also mentioned that at a later date I would post a video of how to operate it during an actual cook.  That’s what the video below is all about.  As you probably are aware if you read my blog, I cook on a 22.5″ Weber Smokey Mountain, therefore this video is specific to operating the DigiQ DX on that style of BBQ smoker.  However, if you visit BBQ Guru’s website, you’ll notice that the controller is the same no matter what cooker you have, it’s just the adapter that differs.  So…whether or not you have a Weber Smokey Mountain, you’ll still get a good feel for how these controllers work by checking out the below video.  If you’re really serious about “low and slow” BBQing, then I HIGHLY recommend you pick one of these bad boys up.  They’re not cheap (my kit cost $288), but it saves on time and charcoal and most likely helps avoid unnecessary stress during your cook 🙂

    Great video. I’m almost hooked. I have one question. When you installed the fan adaptor, did it fit well on the inside and outside or did you have to seal up around them? Thanks, and again great video.

      It fits really well, but the kit comes with some high heat tape that’s use to seal any tiny gaps. I have a video on my YouTube channel that shows that on my Weber kettle. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVb1Veh2lTk

      I’m looking to get one of these, went to their site, and noticed they have the cyberq wifi now. Would that be a good option, do you know anything about it?

        Hey Keith-

        Yes, I’m familiar w/ the CyberQ. In fact, I got one a while back to test out but unfortunately had issues w/ getting it connected to my network and couldn’t ever get it to work (regardless of the troubleshooting I went through w/ their tech support…). I do think it’s a great option if you want control over your cook while away from your home…but I’m always around for the most part when I’m cooking…so I just sent it back. I’ve read on some forums about other guys having similar issues w/ the network stuff, but could have been something specific on my end. Not sure…

    I just purchased one of these so i am just learning. I have a question about yout lit charcoal. I have same size WSM as you. How much lit charcoal did you use & did you spread the lit charcoal all over or just pour in the middle? Also, did you add any wood, if so, when did you add?

      First off, congrats on getting a DigiQ! It’s still one of my most favorite BBQ gadgets and I use it all the time and it’s held up great 🙂

      In general, with WSM’s, you want to mound a pile of unlit briquettes (or lump charcoal if you choose to use that…) and spread 1/4 – 1/2 chimney load or so on top of your unlit briquettes. Some people put the lit coals just in the middle, but I don’t think that really matters to be honest. And yes, you’ll want to add some smoke wood chunks at that same time and wait til the wood is smoldering and you have nice thin, blueish/white smoke coming out of your top vent. At that time, it’s time to toss the meat on!

    Steve: does the blower/fan kick up ashes into the food when it’s activated? If so, what is the work-around?

    Just got mine yesterday. Will be using it thus weekend with my 22.5″WSM.

      Tommy, no man, the fan isn’t that strong…plus…on a WSM, you have the water pan that acts as a nice barrier anyways… But the 5 CFM and 10 CFM fans are just enough to stoke the fire and that’s it. It’s not like a wind tunnel or anything in there 🙂

    Just ordered the Guru diqI Q…hopefully I’ll be cooking with it next weekend on my weber 2w in h…any helpful hints…cooking brisket
