Book Review: How To Market Your BBQ Sauce

Without a doubt, one of the first things that drew me to BBQ (other than the smell of smoke!) was BBQ sauce.  I’ve always loved all kinds of BBQ sauces and even attempt to make my own from time to time.  The key word in that sentence is “attempt”…because I am no expert like Brian Henderson, author of the new Ebook How To Market Your BBQ Sauce.  Brian is a BBQ Sauce master and his website,, is the largest BBQ sauce review site online.  Nothing even comes close.

How To Market Your BBQ Sauce is a very well laid out book which will be a great investment for someone that is looking to take that special homemade sauce of theirs to the next level.  The book has great photography and Brian’s writing style is clear and concise.  One thing I really liked about the book is the “4 P’s” approach Brian took.  He lays the book out in a easy-to-follow order with “Product”, “Price”, “Placement” and “Promotion”.  Brian covers topics like the look and feel of the label you choose, the name of your sauce, flavor profiles, pricing structures and social media advertising….just to name a few.

I can tell you that being a guy that LOVES some good BBQ sauce, reading this book made me want to try this out for myself!  Too bad I don’t have that secret recipe that a lot of guys have 🙁  Guess I’ll have to start working towards that!  I highly recommend you pick up a copy of this great Ebook if you’re even remotely interested in taking a stab at marketing your secret recipe 🙂

You can catch up with Brian on his website, Facebook or Twitter.

I had the chance to catch up with Brian and bounce a few quick questions off him.  Here’s what he had to say:

1.  Tell us a bit about yourself and your BBQ background

As long as I remember, I’ve always had a passion for a good cookout with friends, family, cold beer, grilled meat, and BBQ sauce – on anything.   I started the website in 2007 after being inspired by someone I worked for at the time who had an Energy Drink Review company called Bevnet. He started that business in college as a way to get free energy drinks…  I thought to myself, “Wow, I could get free BBQ sauce just by writing about it!”

Over time, the site has grown on me and tapped a hidden passion for helping the little guy get ahead in a world filled with big BBQ sauce companies. I help them by reviewing their products and giving them advice of what they should do next – I find it humbling to know that dozens of companies have switched labels and modified ingredients based on my input. There is definitely a CRAFT BBQ SAUCE Movement out there.

The site has been fun to run and I’ve learned a lot (WordPress, Facebook, SEO, online marketing) and met tons of great people including my good friend Jay Prince who writes BBQ Tools & Tech Reviews for the site (he’s one of the nicest guys and fairest/most comprehensive reviewers in the industry I might say) and Wayne Brown (Big Wayner) who does rub reviews for the site and tickles my tastebuds with his excellent pictures of spiced and smoked meat.

The site averages 20,000 unique visitors per month and one of the most popular features of the site is our BBQ Sauce Giveaways which anyone is free to sign up for.

Last year I started selling a “How to Market Your BBQ Sauce” Ebook and I’ve now sold over 200 copies – my BEST sale was to the legend Dave “Sweet Baby” Raymond!  He sent me an email that said, you’ve got some good stuff in here” and left his phone number..  So I called him up and he told me how he got started and gave me some great tips on how to improve the Ebook! A great guy!

This year I’ll be guest judging the largest BBQ sauce competition in the world, the American Royal BBQ sauce competition in KC, MO – they are taking me “backstage” to see how the event is run and I will definitely share some pictures from behind the scenes.  I can’t wait!

2.  Tell us about the book and who should buy it

The book is for anyone looking to get started in the Hot Sauce or BBQ Sauce business.  I talk to a lot of people who have done it both the right way and the wrong way, and hopefully reading the book can save a lot of time and money for new saucemakers (by not making same mistakes as others) and includes plenty of tips on how to make more money with sauce.  The book is made for someone without a sauce, with a fresh canvas, to help plan out their own personal world bbq sauce domination.  But it has also been very helpful for people who already have a sauce, and felt they need to make some marketing adjustments.

3.  Where can people buy your book?

The PDF-format Ebook “How to Market Your BBQ sauce” is available for $20 at my site using the following link:
It is readable on any device that can read a PDF…  from iPhone to Android to Mac to PC to iPad to Kindle.  Hope your readers enjoy it!
