Bissell Maple Farm located in Rock Creek, Ohio has been producing top quality maple products since the late 1800’s. The company offers staple maple products such as pure maple syrup, pure maple and maple coated candy. I recently used their pure maple syrup in a maple lemon glazed salmon recipe and the quality of the maple was top notch. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a bottle of the company’s “Sweet and Spicy” maple BBQ sauce and let me just say you need to stop reading this and immediately go order a bottle. Seriously….go do that right now….it’s that good! 🙂
Let’s take a look:
Though there’s nothing too special about the design of the label, this is one of those sauces that lets the flavor do the talking.
No bad stuff (HFCS) in this sauce. Nice and simple. I tasted maple first, then the onion and garlic and then a bit of heat on the end (the cayenne primarily). Though this sauce has “Spicy” in it’s name, I’d have to disagree. To me, it’s not spicy at all, just a small, tiny kick of heat. But then again….I’m fairly tolerant to heat and couple of the ladies mentioned they picked up on the heat right away. I still think they could heat this up a bit more.. 🙂
The sauce pours a rich mahogany color and a medium thickness and if you look closely you can see some of the chili flakes floating around.
I basted a rack of 6-hr, slow smoked spare ribs about 30 minutes before they were done and this is right before I pulled them off. Look at that color!
The flavor of this sauce with these spares made these some of the best spare I’ve had in a while. The only other sauce I’ve had that was this unique on ribs in the past was the Easy Peasy BBQ Insurance sauce which has a massive soy profile.
This sauce is (or was b/c it’s gone…) awesome, so awesome that I used the entire bottle on two large racks of spares. When I served the spares up they got annihilated within minutes and the popular comment was “Oh my gosh this sauce is amazing!”.
