Say hello to my new favorite mustard-based BBQ sauce, SuckleBusters “Gold” sweet and spicy mustard BBQ sauce. For starters, mustard-based sauces are hands down my absolute favorite of all the regional sauces, so when I got home and had a care package from SuckleBusters owner Dan Arnold waiting for me on my front porch, I was quite excited to try out their mustard-based offering. The Gold is rightly named, because after having tasted this sauce for the first time I was pretty sure I had indeed just struck BBQ gold 🙂 Here’s why:
This sauce, as the label suggests, is literally “burstin’ with flavor” and also doesn’t contain any “bad stuff” either (it’s all natural, no MSG, no HFCS, etc…). It pours super thick (which is great b/c it did a great job of gripping the ribs and pulled pork below) and has a dark, yellowish-brown color. Where this sauce really shines though is in the taste. It’s a perfect combo of sweet with heat and pairs with pork perfectly in my opinion. Now, if you aren’t a big heat fan, then tread carefully b/c it packs a decent jalapeño punch and if you down a quarter of the bottle like I did when we sat down to eat, the heat will definitely creep up on you. To me, that’s a great thing, but to others (like my wife) that aren’t a fan of warmer sauces, you might want to go lighter on the pour.
Another thing I really like about this sauce is how few ingredients are in it. Dan and his people have found a way to take a handful of ingredients and crank out an amazing sauce with a ton of flavor profile and that’s something that’s not easy to do. Bottom line is that this is a store-bought sauce that is so worth buying in my opinion. Sure, you can make you own and try to replicate some of the greats (and believe me, I have tried…), but this is sauce that will now have a permanent home in my fridge 🙂
